Member News: New Student : Trainee Mentoring Scheme Launched

The Law Society of Scotland has launched an exciting new mentoring scheme for law students to help them navigate the early stages of employment by matching them with a trainee solicitor.

The year-long pilot scheme will run initially in Edinburgh and aims to match 16 pairs of mentors and mentees.  Applications for student mentees and trainee solicitor mentors were sought in April 2017 and a positive response has been received from both groups.

In May, all recruited mentors completed an induction to ensure they would feel confident taking on a mentoring relationship.  The induction covered understanding the role of a mentor, how to set boundaries and how to offer support by asking the right questions and offering guidance.

The recruited mentees also had an induction to ensure they fully understood the principles of mentoring and what to expect from the relationship.

The scheme will run for a year and a feasibility assessment will be conducted to determine whether the scheme can be rolled out to law students across Scotland.
