FREE TRAINING: Fast Forward provides practitioners with free gambling education training

17 April 2019

As you may already know, in 2018 Fast Forward launched the Gambling Education Hub, which is Scotland’s only national gambling education and prevention programme. It provides practitioners with free training, resources and support regarding gambling-related harm, and it works to ensure that every young person in Scotland has access to effective gambling education and prevention services.

Recent figures from the Gambling Commission show that 14% of 11-16 year olds spent their own money in the past week: this rate was higher than Drinking alcohol (13%), Smoking tobacco (4%) and taking illegal drugs (2%), 26% of young people have seen their parents or guardians gamble, 60% of young people think their parents would prefer them not to gamble at all, however only 19% stated that their parents set strict rules about gambling with no negotiation.  Gambling is a public health issue, however it is often a hidden problem – the CPD sessions that the Hub offers are a great opportunity to strengthen the role that practitioners working with parents and families can have in promoting gambling prevention and early intervention.

Fast Forward will be running a free Gambling Education Training in Glasgow on Thursday May 30 (9.30am-12.30pm). This is open to practitioners specifically working in services that support parents, carers and families.

Through a harm reduction approach, this CPD opportunity will support participants in:

  • Increasing their awareness of gambling-related harms and the impact on young people, parents and their families
  • Strengthening their skills and confidence to deliver gambling education and prevention activities with parents, carers
  • Increasing their knowledge of resources available and of specialised support services.

The Hub also offers tailored in-house CPD workshops, always free of charge – if this is something you’d like to consider.

Similarly, if you’d like to explore alternative ways through which the Hub can support you in including gambling-related harm in the work you and your team do, then give Fast Forward a call. Details on the resource can be found here.
