Member News: Breaking Out's New 'Breaking Bad' Project

18 September 2014

Mentor Scotland has announced a one year pilot project to extend its existing work delivering peer led alcohol awareness programmes within HMI Polmont. The project, entitled ‘Breaking Bad’, aims to work with sixty young men aged between 16 and 17 years of age, recruiting those who have already completed the ‘Breaking Out Peer Alcohol’ programmes or those referred by Polmont support agencies. The pilot is funded by Scottish Whisky Action fund and administered by Foundation Scotland.

The project targets under 18s and builds on the highly successful, externally evaluated peer led alcohol project currently available to 18-21 year old offenders. The further accredited alcohol training programme focuses on personal and social development, goal planning and problem solving, with a strong focus on personal responsibility and desistance. Each participant will develop a personalised goal plan that will help them develop an understanding of what they can do to help them to desist from alcohol related offending behaviour. The project will work in close partnership with through care providers to ensure young people are aware of the support available to them both within Polmont and on their release.

The new project starts in the autumn and the learning from its development will contribute towards the Breaking Out toolkit which will be available to practitioners in summer 2015.
