Youth Unemployment at 6 Year Low

Figures published today by the Office for National Statistics show falling unemployment and increasing employment for people aged 16-24 in Scotland. The number of young people unemployed in Scotland is now at the lowest level for six years with 72,000 young people currently unemployed in Scotland – a drop of 29,000 over the year – and the lowest level since 2008.

The Scottish youth unemployment rate is down 5.6 percentage points over the year while the UK unemployment rate is down 5.1 percentage points over the year. The number of young people claiming Jobseekers Allowance has also fallen – 20,200 young people were on the claimant count in September 2014, a decrease of 9,900 (or 32.8 per cent) over the year.
