A Warm Welcome To Our Newest Members

Over the past few months we have welcomed a variety of mentoring projects to our membership. New members are working under various themes and all new members have a profile on our website. We encourage anyone interested in these projects to utilise our ‘Mentoring Map’ to find out a bit more about our newest member projects; the details of the lead contact for any mentoring activities within a project is shown on each individual profile.

Below is a list of our newest members along with a little information on their work and interest in mentoring:

  • Ayrshire College (Kilwinning Campus): Following on from the success of its existing mentoring projects, Ayrshire college is interested in expanding its mentoring activity and encouraging more students in the Kilwinning campus to get involved in mentoring.
  • Befriend a Child: operates across Aberdeen City supporting volunteers to befriend, mentor and support children aged 5-16 living in disadvantaged families. The project is interested in developing a more structured mentoring programme to support its older children (aged 13+) who may not be attending school and / or may not be interested in the school curriculum.
  • Cothrom: is a community and development organisation in which is at the beginning of a new two year project to provide mentoring to young people aged 16 to 24 on Uist and Barra in the Outer Herbrides.
  • Edinburgh International Festival: is a performing arts festival that runs throughout August each year with a Creative Learning Team which runs a year-round programme of activity with local schools and community groups. As part of a three-year residency programme with Castlebrae Community High School, the Festival plan to initiate a bespoke mentoring programme with senior school pupils.
  • Falkirk Council Leaving Care Service: is a stand-alone, Big Lottery funded, service for care leavers within the Falkirk Council area. The project aims to provide a peer mentoring service for young people who are at the point of leaving care.
  • Glasgow Association for Mental Health (GAMH): is a Third Sector organisation which aims to promote the mental health and well-being of people and communities of Greater Glasgow. GAMH creates services and opportunities for people recovering from mental health problems and provides support for carers including young carers.
  • Glasgow Caledonian University – School Connect Outreach Team: works in partnership with six Glasgow secondary schools, supporting senior school pupils with the application and transition to Glasgow Caledonian University. As members of the programme, pupils work closely with student mentors on a range of activities designed to develop the skills necessary for university study and to support them through the application process.
  • Glasgow Caledonian University Radiotherapy and Oncology Student Mentoring: is setting up a mentorship programme for radiotherapy and oncology students on placement in the radiotherapy department in the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, which is its main placement site. The mentors will be qualified therapeutic radiographers who have volunteered to work on the project with the students.
  • Liber8 (Lanarkshire) Ltd: provide the largest family support service in Lanarkshire for individuals and families directly or indirectly affected by alcohol and substance misuse. There are plans for a newly designed and funded mentoring project which will begin in the near future.
  • Scottish Council on Deafness: represents organisations working on behalf of, deaf sign language users; deafened; deafblind and hard of hearing people. Members of the council have recently expressed an interest in mentoring services.
  • Simon Community Scotland: is an organisation that works with people affected by homelessness with outreach, supported accommodation, resettlement and housing support services across Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and North Ayrshire. The Community is in the process of setting up a new Peer Mentoring programme.
