A message from our Chair, Alastair MacGregor

The Board of Directors and Trustees of the Scottish Mentoring Network are excited about the new logo for the organisation, which coincides with an important change in direction as we focus on what we want to achieve for our Vision for 2030: "effective, high quality mentoring, recognised, valued and available to all", which was formally introduced to members at the National Event in 2024. We are also pleased to announce that work is underway, which will allow us to launch the new Scottish Mentoring Network website at our National Event in November 2025.

We are very fortunate to have not only a very experienced, dedicated and professional staff team, but also a Board which is diverse in experience, knowledge and skills and which is very future focussed on delivering to Scotland, and beyond, a portfolio of products and services. This demonstrates the importance that the organisation takes in relation to the role that mentoring plays in supporting not only the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in society, but also in supporting the development of an individual in many other diverse settings including;

  • Skill development : mentees can acquire knowledge and skills faster through guidance and real-world insights through practical advice based on experience beyond what textbooks provide.
  • Career advancement: networking opportunities to valuable professional networks; goal setting and progression; to help set realistic career goals and achieve them step by step; increased visibility by being mentored by a respected professional who can raise your profile within an organisation or industry.
  • Confidence and motivation: having support systems from someone who believes in your potential and builds confidence; overcoming challenges as mentors can help you to navigate obstacles and stay motivated even during tough times.
  • Personal growth: mentors challenge mentees to reflect on their strengths, weaknesses and value providing guidance to improve critical thinking and judgement, and providing accountability through regular check-ins and follow-through.
  • Long-term impact: via the development of long-term relationships, offering continued support, advice, and perhaps being a mentor for others.

Mentoring can be transformative, helping individuals to grow faster, make better decisions and achieve their full potential.

We are always keen to broaden the experience and knowledge base of the Board, and we are currently looking to recruit a new member director/trustee who has a particular skill set relating to finance and who would be able to take on the role of Treasurer. For more information on this exciting opportunity, please email alastair@scottishmentoringnetwork.co.uk

I am delighted to be able to Chair the Board of Trustees and Directors at this important and exciting time for the Network and I look forward to continued engagement with the membership base moving forward to ensure that we continue to meet the needs to those, who like me, value the contribution that mentoring makes on the lives of individuals in Scotland and beyond. If you have any ideas and suggestions linked to the SMN Vision 2030 workstreams, please contact the CEO, maureen@scottishmentoringnetwork.co.uk
