This study by Grossman and Rhodes, published in the Journal of Community Psychology Vol.30 No.2, sampled 1,138 adolescents and found that those in mentoring relationships that lasted a year or longer reported the largest number of improvements, with progressively fewer effects among those youths in relationships that terminated earlier.
