Reducing Reoffending: International Summit on Female Offending

28 May 2015

Today in Edinburgh leading experts from as far afield as Canada, Denmark, Holland and Sweden gathered for an International summit on female offending. The event is being undertaken to develop a radical new approach to the way Scotland deals with female offenders.

Speaking after formally opening the summit, Justice Secretary, Michael Matheson, said “The time has come for a radical shake up of the way in which Scotland deals with women in prison”. Mr Matheson said that jailing women wasn’t part of his vision for a “modern and progressive country” highlighting the number of children of imprisoned women who go into a cycle of offending. The summit will run for three days and it is hoped that shared experiences can help shape Scotland’s plans for dealing with female offenders.
